On Aug. 29, OpTic FormaL announced that he would be retiring from competing in Call of Duty via a tweet. The OpTic icon shared a link to this announcement on TwitLonger in his tweet.

This marks another notable change in Chicago’s roster following Envoy’s upcoming free agency. “To my fans, especially the Greenwall, you now have my full attention,” he wrote on Twitlonger. “I’d like to see where creating content might take me, it’s definitely grown on me throughout this year through the podcasts and other videos we made at the HQ.”

Matthew ‘FormaL’ Piper created more content over the past couple of seasons with his OpTic teammates including Hecz. Moreover, he made multiple appearances on the weekly OpTic Podcast. In 2019, FormaL exceeded the mark of 20K subscriptions on Twitch, per TwitchTracker.com.

FormaLis one of the most popular esports competitors of all time, with one CoD Champs, win, 23 LAN tournament wins, and about $900K earned as a professional. He is considered one of the best FPS competitors of all time. As a result, he is in a lot of stress and pressure, especially since he has been competing for more than a decade.

“After 10 years of scrims, tournaments, and just grinding altogether it can get tiresome,” He said. “I do believe I could still compete, but it’d be just straight up selfish to whoever I’d be playing with, knowing I might not give them my all.”

FormaL’s popularity as a part-time content creator is an indication of what’s to come as the CoD esports icon moves to full-time content creation. OpTic’s roster currently has Scump and Dashy, and there are two more spots to fill.
