Password management solution company Nordpass conducted a study that shows “samsung” was one of the most commonly used passwords last year.

Samsung (with a lowercase S) was the most commonly used password in nearly 30 countries. This puts the security of users worldwide in jeopardy.

Over the past few years, consumers have started using the name of popular brands like Samsung as a password. So, it isn’t surprising that the “samsung” password was in the 198th rank in popularity in 2019.

However, it ranked 189th in 2020 and gained rank to 78th in 2021. About 5 million users picked the most used password, which is “password.”

Other frequently used passwords include “guest,” “123456789,” and “123456.” Aside from “samsung,” there is a slew of other brand-inspired passwords used by several users online.

For instance, some car enthusiasts used passwords like “mini” and “kia.” Tiffany, Nike, and Adidas are also some of the most used passwords.

How long does it take to decrypt passwords like “samsung”?

A new report (via SamMobile) suggests it takes only 1 second to decrypt simple predictable passwords. Likewise, there are varying results when you combine lowercase and uppercase letters with numbers.

A 7-digit password that has all the aforesaid elements could take about 7 seconds to decrypt. However, an 8-digit password could take around 7 minutes.

According to the study conducted by Nordpass, the most commonly-used passwords can be decrypted in less than one second. This is primarily because they are simple, short, and only have numbers or letters.

So, it is safe to say that using “Samsung” or “samsung” as your password isn’t a good idea.
