‘Can’t Marry A Poor Man’ Posts Of Elon Musk And Bill Gates Are FAKE

Fake posts allege Elon Musk and Bill Gates explaining why their daughters can’t marry a poor man.

Two Facebook posts have recently gone viral on the internet. One post has statements said by SpaceX and Tesla CEO Elon Musk and the other by Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates. Both these posts explain why their daughters can’t marry a poor man.

The posts included a few generic quotes such as “Wealth is the ability to create wealth”, “90% of lottery millionaires become poor again after 5 years”, and “Wealth is a state of mind”.

The posts went viral on the internet. Several news websites like “Newsbreak“, “NGGossips” and “GBETU TV” wrote articles based on the posts.

Posts Of Elon Musk and Bill Gates Are Fake

However, it turned out that the posts are spreading false statements. Fact-checkers quickly dived into the matter. India Today Anti Fake News War Room (AFWA) found that neither Elon Musk nor Bill Gates has given such statements.

All the generic finance-related quotes have been borrowed from articles and videos. The quotes were then compiled in the posts and were falsely attributed to Musk and Gates.

AFWA also did not find any mainstream news report that has attributed the viral statement to Musk or Gates.

The quote “Wealth is a state of mind” was attributed by Forbes to British poet Edward Young.

Another quote in the post was “90% of lottery millionaires become poor again after 5 years”. AFWA found a similar statement saying “about 70 percent of people who win a lottery or receive a large windfall go bankrupt within a few years”.

The statement was found in a report by The Washington Post. Here, the quote was attributed to the United States-based National Endowment for Financial Education.

AFWA also contacted a spokesperson from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation who confirmed the viral statement is not a quote by Gates. Moreover, Elon Musk does not have a daughter.
